Presented on: Tuesday, May 19, 2020

Presented by: Margie Scalley Vaught, CPC, COC, CPC-I, CCS-P, MCS-P, ACS-EM, ACS-OR

Starting January 1, therapy service claims must be submitted with new payment modifiers when therapy assistants provide a certain level of service. Practices must understand how and when these modifiers should be appended now, because in less than two years, the modifiers will carry payment adjustments. Using them improperly could result in underpayment, disruptions to your revenue cycle, or compliance risk.

At the conclusion of this program, participants will be able to:

  • Understand which codes should receive the new therapy modifiers and which should not
  • Calculate the percentage of therapy assistants’ time of involvement to know when modifiers should be appended
  • Grasp modifier application for typical case scenarios
  • Help their practices steer clear of documentation errors that could trigger payer audits

  • Discuss which types of therapy codes may need the therapy modifiers appended and which do not
  • Explain how to calculate time of therapy assistant involvement to understand when modifiers should be appended
  • Learn how to accurately document who is doing what timed modalities to support billing for the PTA/OTA versus the therapist
  • Examine typical scenarios to increase understanding of the new modifier policy
  • Review documentation risk areas for therapy services that may trigger payer review or audit
  • Q&A

Who Should Listen?

  • Orthopedic Practice and Therapy Practice Professional Coders
  • Coding Managers
  • Billing Managers
  • Clinicians
