Certified Coder Boot Camp®—Inpatient Version

Course Overview

Inpatient coding is more complex than ever. Let our expert instructors make it simple.

The Certified Coder Boot Camp®—Inpatient Version is an intensive coding education course that ensures coders are proficient in the most up-to-date ICD-10-CM/PCS coding for hospital inpatient facility services and MS-DRG assignment. Skilled inpatient coders are in high demand as hospitals and healthcare systems struggle with the high costs of inpatient admissions. The need for highly skilled inpatient coders is greater than ever!

The course goes beyond explaining basic DRG classification to ensure accurate code reporting and help facilities stop leaving money on the table. Coders leave class ready to:

  • Apply inpatient coding guidelines.
  • Accurately assign ICD-10-CM/PCS codes and MS-DRGs.
  • Query physicians more effectively We’re not like other coding classes.

We have been teaching inpatient coding for more than 20 years! The Certified Coder Boot Camp—Inpatient Version uses a successful and proven method for teaching inpatient coding fundamentals:

  • Emphasis on hands-on exercises: Attendees complete multiple inpatient case studies and operative reports based on real medical records, so they fully understand the impact of diagnosis/procedure code assignment on MS-DRG assignment.
  • Immediate feedback: Our instructors provide real-time feedback on the codes you assign. Continuous interactions with instructors ensure you have a complete understanding of code assignment.
  • Rules-based learning: Our instructors only use recognized source authorities, such as the Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting and the AHA’s Coding Clinic for ICD-10-CM/PCS®, in course materials.
  • Experience: All of our instructors have at least 20 years of inpatient coding experience. They know exactly what coders need to learn and how to present complex coding topics in an easy-to-understand manner.

The Certified Coder Boot Camp—Inpatient Version not only teaches you everything you need to know to be an inpatient coder, but also provides several professional benefits:

  • Enhance your career potential and growth—employers are looking for coders with accurate inpatient coding skills.
  • Take on more complex medical coding cases.
  • Increase your professional credibility.
  • Become a valuable resource to your facility.
  • Provide an opportunity for much-needed continuing education credits For employers: Coder training is an important investment for your organization.

Having highly qualified, certified coders on staff can:

  • Ensure correct medical coding based on reputable source authorities such as the Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting and the AHA's Coding Clinic
  • Facilitate the physician query process to ensure appropriate DRG assignment
  • Ensure appropriate reimbursement for services performed
  • Increase employee confidence
  • Increase productivity
  • Maintain compliance

Questions/Answers

How long does the course last?
One week. Typically, class runs Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. until at least 5:00 p.m. each day (class often runs later than 5:00 p.m. if the students need additional assistance with a particular subject). We end class a little early on Friday, typically by 3:00 p.m.

Who typically attends the Certified Coder Boot Camp®—Inpatient Version?

  • Coders
  • Clinical documentation integrity specialists
  • Inpatient coding auditors
  • Medical records/health information managers/staff
  • Compliance officers and auditors
  • Coding consultants
  • Coding educators
  • Health plan and insurance company personnel, such as inpatient claims reviewers, fraud and abuse, special investigations
  • Medicare intermediary personnel
  • Government healthcare agencies

Does completion of the course lead to formal certification?
We anticipate that many of the Certified Coder Boot Camp®—Inpatient Version course participants will, at some point, sit for a national certification exam, such as the Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) exam offered by the American Health Information Management Association. While the Certified Coder Boot Camp®—Inpatient Version is helpful in preparing for credentialing exams, CCS candidates should be aware that the exam also covers topics other than inpatient coding, notably outpatient CPT coding and Medicare reimbursement.

Consequently, candidates will need additional training/preparation beyond the Certified Coder Boot Camp®—Inpatient Version. CCS candidates may also want to consider taking our Certified Coder Boot Camp® (focused on CPT coding) and our Medicare Boot Camp®—Hospital Version (focused on Medicare reimbursement for hospital services). The Medicare Boot Camp—Hospital Version would also be helpful for those sitting for the CIC exam since it includes reimbursement-related questions beyond what is covered in the Certified Coder Boot Camp—Inpatient Version.

How intense is the course compared to more traditional full-semester courses?
It is an understatement to say that the course is intense. We are covering a full semester of material in one week. Other than breaks, course participants are in class from 8:00 a.m. to at least 5:00 p.m. each day, although we try to end class a little early on Friday. Course participants should plan on devoting their full time and attention to the Boot Camp during the week of their course. Course participants should plan on taking the entire Boot Camp week off from work, and participants who live more than 45 minutes away from the course site should reserve a hotel room for the week.

Does the course require previous coding experience?
Because of the fast-paced nature of the course, it is highly recommended that Certified Coder Boot Camp®—Inpatient Version participants have at least one year of coding-related experience. While prior inpatient coding experience is helpful, this course is also designed for individuals with outpatient coding experience (such as CPCs or COCs) interested in enhancing their coding skills.

Also, if you do not already have a solid understanding of medical terminology, we strongly recommend that you complete a medical terminology self-study course prior to the start of the course. A good self-study program is Medical Terminology for Health Professions, by Ann Ehrlich and Carol L. Schroeder.

Can I work with HCPro to offer this course just for the coders in my organization?
Yes, HCPro can deliver this class live virtually or in person at your facility just for your team (at a substantial discount). For more information, please email sales@hcpro.com.

Does HCPro offer training for outpatient or professional services coding?
Yes. We offer the Certified Coder Boot Camp®—Original Version, an intensive one-week course focusing on ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS Level II coding for professional services and hospital outpatient services.
