- Hands-on learning: Course participants work approximately 500 coding exercises and leave with answer keys for all exercises.
- Small class size: We limit the number of students in each class to ensure individual attention.
- Well-established program: HCPro is the nation's first organization to offer Boot Camp training courses to healthcare coding professionals. We have more than 20 years of experience teaching coders, and on average, participants rate this course 4.9 on a 5.0 scale.
With coding demands as high as ever, HCPro Boot Camps provide a deeper understanding of your role and responsibilities and the impact you can make on your organization.

Things to Know Before Attending Class
Directions and Hotel Information
The hotel address, phone number, URL, room rate, and room rate cut-off date are posted on the Locations/Dates tab. The hotel website gives detailed directions to the hotel as well as information about the location. Please call the hotel directly to make a room reservation. Be sure to identify yourself as an HCPro Certified Coder Boot Camp participant and make your reservation before the cut-off date. After the cut-off date, contact the hotel to determine room availability and rates.
Course Material
When you arrive at class, you will receive a workbook containing the class materials used throughout the Boot Camp.Manuals Needed for Class
As part of your course registration fee, HCPro will provide all attendees with two out of the three required manuals:
- 2025 ICD-10-CM Expert for Physicians
- 2025 HCPCS II Expert
The instructor will distribute these manuals on the first day of class.
You must also bring your own AMA CPT® 2025 Professional Edition© to class.
The “Standard” version of the CPT manual, CPT Expert, and CPT Plus! are not acceptable for the Boot Camp.
NOTE: There will be no discounts or refunds for students desiring to bring their own ICD-10-CM and HCPCS II coding manuals to class. Please be sure to save room in your luggage to transport these manuals home with you.
Medical Terminology
If you do not already have a solid understanding of medical terminology, it is also strongly recommended that you complete a medical terminology self-study course prior to the start of your Boot Camp. Medical Terminology for Health Professions, 8th Edition by Ann Ehrlich and Carol L. Schroeder offers a comprehensive guide for the beginner. The ISBN number is 1305634357. The book is available on Amazon.com and may also be available from one of your local bookstores. Our course participants who do not have a strong background in medical terminology typically find this book extremely helpful.
Classroom Time
It is an understatement to say that this course is intense. Other than breaks, we will be in class from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday. If the class gets behind, class may run later than 5:00 p.m.
Please plan on having several hours of homework each evening. If you live more than 45 minutes away from the class location, you may want to reserve a hotel room in order to provide enough time for homework at the end of each day. Cell phone use during class is strictly prohibited.
Lunch
We will take about a 45-minute break for lunch each day. We typically provide coffee in the morning and drinks and a light snack in the afternoon; everyone is on their own for lunch. Note that many hotels do not have restaurants on-site. If you are flying to the course, we generally recommend renting a car.
What to Bring to Class
Please bring the following to all classes:
- 2025 CPT® Professional Edition
- 2025 ICD-10-CM Expert for Physicians and 2025 HCPCS Level II manual (the instructor will provide these two manuals at the beginning of the Boot Camp, but make sure you bring them to class every day!)
- Highlighter
- A notebook for making your own notes
- Sticky notes/flags
- Pens/pencils
Dress
Business attire is not necessary. Please dress comfortably. Also, we find that the classrooms are sometimes on the cool side, even during the warmer months. You may want to bring a sweater or sweatshirt in case you get cold.

Questions/Answers
What is the focus of the Certified Coder Boot Camp?
The Certified Coder Boot Camp focuses on ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS Level II coding for professional services and hospital outpatient services. The first part of the course is devoted primarily to ICD-10-CM diagnosis coding, while the remaining time is devoted primarily to CPT and HCPCS II coding. The purpose of this Boot Camp is to provide a solid foundation in ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS II coding.
How long does the course last?
Five days. Typically, the live class runs Monday through Thursday from 8:00 a.m. until at least 5:00 p.m. each day (class often runs later than 5:00 if the students need additional assistance with a particular subject) and 8:00-3:00p.m. on Friday.
Where is the course offered?
Open registration Certified Coder Boot Camp courses are offered at various locations around the country, typically at mid-priced business hotels, such as Hyatt Place or Hilton Garden Inn. For a list of upcoming open registration Certified Coder Boot Camps, click on Course Locations/Dates.
Can HCPro offer this course just for my staff?
Yes, we offer this Boot Camp privately for organizations with many employees who need training. For more information on hosting a Boot Camp just for your staff, please email sales@hcpro.com.
Who typically attends the course?

- Medical records/health information managers/staff
- Registration managers/staff
- Clinical managers and department heads
- Physicians, NPs, PAs, and other clinicians

How intense is the course?
It is an understatement to say that this Boot Camp is intense. Over the week, students work about 500 coding problems/exercises (including nightly homework). Course participants should plan to devote their full time and attention to the Boot Camp program during the week of their course. Course participants should also plan to take the entire Boot Camp week off from work.
Course participants who live more than 45 minutes away from the course site should reserve a hotel room for the week. Due to the amount of classroom and homework time required, our students have found it very difficult to commute more than 45 minutes each way and still do well in the course.
Does the course require previous coding experience?
Because of the fast-paced nature of the course, it is highly recommended that participants have at least one year of coding-related experience or experience working in healthcare billing, administrative, or clinical role.
Also, if you do not already have a solid understanding of medical terminology, we strongly recommend that you complete a medical terminology self-study course prior to the start of the Boot Camp.
How is the course taught?
The course is taught using a combination of lecture, class discussion, and individual and group problem solving. Course participants should also plan to have several hours of additional out-of-class work each evening during the course.
Do I need to bring my own coding manuals to class?
You will need the current year of the AMA CPT® Professional Edition. We will provide you with the latest versions of ICD-10-CM Expert for Physicians and HCPCS Level II.
Does HCPro ever share contact information (e.g., name, address, phone number, email address, etc.) with other companies?
Historically, we have not shared contact information with anyone outside of our company. However, it is possible that at some point we might share contact information with other companies that offer products and services that we think would be of interest to our customers. If you would like us to keep your contact information confidential, please let us know so that we can flag your information in our customer database as "Do Not Share."
