The Live Virtual CDI and Quality Care Measures Boot Camp is an intensive course designed for CDI departments/programs looking to move to the next level of CDI—not just diagnosis review and clarification, but how diagnoses impact hospital quality metrics and influence indirect revenues.

This class covers publicly reported quality data and how code assignment affects quality metrics, including but not limited to the Hospital Value-Based Purchasing Program. Students will learn the why and how of reviewing complex cases involving Patient Safety Indicators (PSI) and hospital-acquired infections (HAI), and leave with measurable strategies for improving their hospital profiles and positively influencing their facility’s value-based incentive payments.

Who is this class for?
The CDI and Quality Care course is designed for CDI departments and programs looking to move to the next level of CDI—not just diagnosis review and clarification, but how diagnoses impact hospital quality metrics and influence indirect revenues. One year of experience is recommended for this course but not required.

Learning Outcomes

At the completion of this Boot Camp, participants will be able to: 

  • Contrast and compare differing healthcare payment methodologies such as IPPS, OPPS, risk based (shared savings) and fee for service. 
  • Explain the impact of principal diagnosis assignment (i.e., diagnosis sequencing) on indirect revenue, including that affected by quality metrics 
  • Define the CDI specialist’s role contributing to successful quality metric reporting
  • Develop documentation strategies to enhance a hospital’s quality metrics without compromising data integrity congruent with official coding guidelines
  • Communicate to physicians how their documentation impacts various quality metrics through coded data, compared to abstracted data and surveillance data
  • Conduct reviews and/or develop appropriate review processes to ensure accurate reporting of Patient Safety Indicator (PSI) 90
  • Develop strategies to leverage collaboration within the revenue cycle, including CDI, coding, infection control, quality, and case management (utilization review) to promote consistency in the reporting of metrics associated with Hospital Value-Based Purchasing (HVBP) and other quality indicators

Who is the class for? 
Live Virtual CDI and Quality Care Measures Boot Camp is aimed at intermediate to advanced CDI specialists. It is also designed for experienced coders looking to increase their clinical knowledge, as well as physicians looking for a refresher in CDI.

This Boot Camp is not recommended for new CDI specialists as it does not concentrate on the process of CDI or the basics of reimbursement and MS-DRGs. If you have never had any training, then our foundational CDI Boot Camp is the program for you. Similarly, physicians seeking to learn the fundamentals of CDI would likely benefit more from that foundational course.

What computer set-up do I need to attend this class?
This will be hosted on the GoToMeeting platform. Attendees should have access to a computer that has a microphone and speakers to participate, there is also an option to dial-in over a phone line if you need to connect on your phone. Live Virtual CDI and Quality Care Measures Boot Camp also doubles as a refresher course for anyone who had formal training prior to ICD-10 implementation. It includes many of the key changes to coding guidelines and Coding Clinic advice under ICD-10. Think of it as a two-for-one—a course with a focus on pathophysiology and a review of what you’ve already learned. 

Are there any prerequisites? 
The Boot Camp is intended for students who have already taken basic CDI training: either on the job or in a general CDI specialist course.

The material presented is at an intermediate level and assumes students have a baseline understanding of DRGs, coding guidelines, and basic query opportunities.
