Course Overview

The CDI and Quality Care Measures Boot Camp® is an intensive course designed for CDI departments/programs looking to move to the next level of CDI—not just diagnosis review and clarification, but how diagnoses impact hospital quality metrics and influence indirect revenues.

This course discusses how publicly reported quality data and code assignment affect quality metrics, including but not limited to the Hospital Value Based Purchasing Program. Attendees will learn how to review complex cases involving Patient Safety Indicators (PSI) and Hospital-Acquired Infections (HAI) and leave with strategies for improving their hospital profiles and positively influencing their facility's value‐based incentive payments.

One year of CDI experience is recommended for this course but not required.

This boot camp will help CDI specialists:

• Apply concepts of CDI record review, query, and provider education to CMS quality reporting measures
• Create a strategy to demonstrate accurate public reporting and quality measure scores
• Accurately apply present on admission indicators and identify query opportunities related to the HAC Reduction Program quality measures

• Describe the potential advantages and documentation opportunities of expanding CDI beyond MS-DRG review/optimization and CC/MCC capture   
• Explain the impact of principal diagnosis assignment (i.e., diagnosis sequencing) on indirect revenue, including that affected by quality metrics and medical necessity denials
• Define the CDI specialist’s role in supporting medical necessity and working collaboratively with utilization review/case management
• Develop documentation strategies to enhance a hospital’s quality metrics without compromising data integrity congruent with official coding guidelines
• Describe how additional CDI responsibilities impact individual metrics, including staffing, productivity, and workflow
• Discuss how physician documentation impacts various quality metrics through coded data, compared to abstracted data and surveillance data

Faculty

Sharme Brodie, RN, CCDS, CCDS-O, CRC, is a clinical documentation integrity (CDI) education specialist for HCPro, a division of Simplify Compliance, in Middleton, Massachusetts. Brodie serves as a full-time instructor for CDI Boot Camps and a subject matter expert for ACDIS. She has more than 40 years of experience in the healthcare industry, including multiple areas of nursing, and has served in a variety of roles at both large academic and small community hospitals. Prior to joining HCPro, Brodie worked as a consultant providing program audits, implementation advice, and continuing education for CDI departments—including physician education—in various healthcare facilities across the country. She has been responsible for the successful implementation and oversight of a CDI department and the revitalization of a CDI department at a small community hospital. She is the coauthor of the Essential Guide to Supporting Quality Care Measures Through Documentation Improvement and is a frequent contributor of articles to ACDIS' CDI Journal and CDI Strategies. Brodie has presented nationally at both the ACDIS Conference and the CDI Outpatient Symposium and is a frequent cohost on the ACDIS podcast. Brodie is currently cochair of both the ACDIS Regulatory Committee and the ACDIS CCDS Certification Committee.

Laurie Prescott, RN, MSN, CCDS, CCDS-O, CDIP, CRC, is an experienced CDI subject matter expert, former interim ACDIS director, and former CDI education director at HCPro. While at ACDIS and HCPro, she was also the lead developer and instructor for the CDI Boot Camps as well as a member of the CCDS-O certification committee and the ACDIS Advisory Board; she also frequently spoke on the ACDIS Podcast and at ACDIS conferences and webinars. She is the author of The Clinical Documentation Improvement Specialist's Complete Training Guide and the ACDIS Pocket Guide series. Prescott has served in a variety of health systems and settings since joining the nursing profession in 1985 and she developed and implemented a CDI program in 2007.

Kelly Sutton, RN, BSN, MHL, CCDS, CCS, is a CDI education specialist for HCPro, in Chicago, Illinois. She serves as a full-time instructor for the CDI Bootcamps and a subject matter expert for ACDIS. Sutton has served on the ACDIS Advisory Board and ACDIS Leadership Council. Sutton is an experienced registered nurse holding a variety of positions in healthcare spanning over 30 years.

Deanne Wilk, MPS, BSN, RN, CCDS, CCDS-O, CDIP, CCS, is a clinical documentation integrity (CDI) education specialist for ACDIS at HCPro. She serves as a full-time instructor for the CDI Boot Camps and as a subject matter expert for ACDIS. Wilk is an accomplished healthcare professional with a diverse background in health information, medical coding, nursing, and CDI. With a strong passion for making a difference, Wilk has dedicated her career to improving the quality and integrity of clinical documentation within the healthcare environment for improved patient care. Having received a master's degree from Penn State University in leadership and a BSN from Drexel University, she acquired the necessary skills and knowledge to establish CDI programs, direct CDI departments from community hospitals to quaternary large academic medical systems, and educate throughout the CDI profession. Over the years, Wilk has worked on numerous projects aimed at advancing CDI education, growth, and awareness.
