Presented by: Kelly Sutton, MHL, RN, CCDS; Catherine Sheika, CCDS

Obtaining accurate documentation for coding “simple” pneumonia isn’t so simple. In fall 2019, the Infectious Diseases Society of America and the American Thoracic Society published treatment and diagnosis guidelines for pneumonia. However, the discrepancy between the coding language and the diagnostic reality often leads to an over-classification of pneumonias as “simple pneumonias.”

Join Kelly Sutton, MHL, RN, CCDS, an ACDIS Advisory Board member, and Catherine Sheika, CCDS, CDI educator for Central Florida South region of AdventHealth, on this 60-minute road trip down the pneumonia pathway. During this webinar, CDI and coding staff will learn to assist providers in accurately documenting this complex disease process and understand how capturing its specificity can affect quality and mortality data.

At the conclusion of this program, participants will be able to:

  • Identify opportunities for capturing specificity of pneumonia
  • Examine the pneumonia pathway in case scenarios to select the type/specificity of pneumonia
  • Demonstrate compliant query construction for pneumonia opportunities

Meet the Speaker

Kelly Sutton Kelly Sutton, MHL, RN, CCDS, system CDI implementation specialist and educator for AdventHealth based in Tampa, Florida, has nearly 30 years’ experience including home health, hospice, and ED. Her roles have included employee occupational health/work comp supervisor and stroke program coordinator. She started her CDI career in 2015 as a frontline CDI specialist in a suburban 170+ bed facility and progressed to a CDI educator before assuming her current role. A presenter for the ACDIS Virtual Curtain Call conference in September 2020, she was elected to the ACDIS Advisory Board for the 2021–2024 term.
Catherine Sheika Catherine Sheika, CCDS, is the CDI educator for the Central Florida South region of AdventHealth. She has been a nurse for 14 years, with experience in the surgical PCU, ICU, neuro ICU, and ED. During her time as a CDI specialist, she reviewed all the mortality, respiratory failure, and rapid response cases for the region. In 2021, when the region’s CDI team went fully remote, Sheika was challenged with developing a remote onboarding program and resources for new CDI specialists within her region. She has also advocated for and led the efforts to develop an AdventHealth Educator Council, in which educators and CDI staff within the AdventHealth system share ideas and resources.
