Earn your certificate in CDI leadership with the Leadership in CDI Boot Camp from the experts at ACDIS

The Leadership in CDI Boot Camp is available in three formats: live in person, virtually with a live instructor, or online eLearning at your own pace. All modalities earn students the Leadership in CDI Certificate, and graduates are designated as ACDIS-Approved CDI Leaders.

Designed by the expert instructors at the Association of Clinical Documentation Integrity Specialists (ACDIS), this Boot Camp provides essential training for anyone in a leadership position or looking to grow into one.

This course provides knowledge and confidence to become an effective leader in CDI, including how to manage and staff the department, develop a department mission, and create a strategy that aligns with your organization’s goals.

The Boot Camp will give you the preparation you need to:

  • Influence and drive value in collaboration with other department leaders and C-suite executives
  • Lead your team to boost effectiveness and enhance employee engagement, satisfaction, and skills

While many courses focus on general leadership concepts, ACDIS developed this course to address the leadership skills and challenges specific to CDI. This course will give you strategies for how to:

  • Lead at the organizational level. An essential first step is to understand the far-reaching impact CDI has across the organization (e.g., quality, healthcare data reporting, denials, compliance). We explore how you, as a leader, can collaborate across departments and leverage the power of a strong CDI department to support your organization’s financial, quality, and strategic goals.

  • Put compliance front and center to drive success and prevent risk. Successful CDI leaders are acutely aware of how to identify compliance risk areas so that they do not leave their department open to vulnerabilities. You will leave with ideas and best practices for conducting internal audits and an understanding of denials management.

  • Hire, develop, and manage staff. CDI leaders across the country struggle to find and grow talent within their teams. We give solid advice—specific to CDI—for how to screen, interview, and hire strong CDI specialists and how to develop them over time.

  • Direct the CDI department. Defining the mission of your department; charting goals, growth, and expansion; and managing change encourages purpose-driven leadership. You will receive guidance on how to intentionally utilize your department's mission to evaluate opportunities and requests that arise for your department. We delve into CDI metrics and offer tips for communicating program and staff effectiveness up and down in the organization.

The Leadership in CDI Boot Camp will help you:

  • Connect how reimbursement methodologies, payer methodologies, healthcare data and compliance, and the CDI function relate to one another
  • Understand common CDI metrics and how to monitor, interpret, and report on staff effectiveness
  • Perform management responsibilities within CDI, such as creating job descriptions, interviewing candidates, and managing remote employees
  • Gain strategies for how to define your program’s mission, reporting structure, and staffing modules
  • Generate ideas for department policies and expansion

For the live in-person version of the Leadership in CDI Boot Camp, students complete an additional eLearning module after the in-person instruction, which includes bite-size training on core business skills and leadership competencies:

  • Brief eLearning courses related to:
    • Business writing
    • Conflict resolution
    • Setting goals to guide employee performance
    • Giving and receiving feedback
  • An ACDIS position paper on effective CDI leadership
  • Excerpts from leading ACDIS books on management

Graduates of the Leadership in CDI Boot Camp demonstrate that they have cultivated both the CDI knowledge and the business and management skills to be a successful leader. They earn the Leadership in CDI Certificate and are allowed to use the designation ACDIS-Approved CDI Leader in their resumes, biographical information, or email signatures.

Leadership in CDI Boot Camp

Course Outline

Module 1: Introduction to CDI

  • Many individuals are asked to manage a CDI department or its staff, yet they often have little understanding of CDI functions or the process of managing those functions. This course begins with a discussion about the CDI manager or leader role as well as the regulatory guidance that directs CDI practice.

Module 2: IPPS and MS-DRGs

  • This module discusses the Inpatient Prospective Payment System (IPPS) and CDI’s function related to code assignment and MS-DRG grouping. The module offers a surface dive into CDI function and how it impacts organizational goals.

Module 3: Introduction to Outpatient CDI

  • This module covers the evolution of CDI into the outpatient setting. It reviews CDI efforts related to the emergency department, observation, and primary care/clinic reviews. The instructor will steer the discussion to cover the various missions related to outpatient CDI, which include:
    • Denials management
    • Risk adjustment
    • Charge capture
    • Quality

Module 4: Other Payer Systems

  • This module continues discussing healthcare reimbursement, touching on a number of methodologies within the inpatient and outpatient settings, including bundled payments, accountable care organizations, risk adjustment, and billing.

Module 5: Healthcare Data and Public Reporting

  • CDI's impact on quality reporting is well established within the industry. This module covers a number of CMS quality monitors and CDI function related to the reporting of this data and organizational reimbursement.

Module 6: CDI Practice: Record Review and Query

  • This module reviews the basics of CDI function, including record review and query compliance.

Module 7: Revenue Cycle and Audit Activities

  • Understanding compliance is a core competency for CDI. This module covers the efforts in place to monitor compliance, including RAC, OIG, and PEPPER data. It also reviews the Medicare appeals process.

Module 8: CDI Metrics

  • Managers must monitor and communicate staff function and effectiveness. This module discusses standard metrics used to measure departmental function and benchmarking.

Module 9: Managing Your CDI Staff

  • Managing staff can be challenging. This module provides direction in how to do so, covering the functions of managing people and a CDI program, including screening applicants, interviewing, hiring, and training. The discussion includes competency assessments and what to consider when employees are working remotely.

Module 10: Directing Your CDI Department

  • Directing a department is different than managing and has different responsibilities. This module offers guidance related to departmental mission, reporting structure, staffing models, written policies, and job roles.

Module 11: CDI Expansion: Managing Change

  • The impact of CDI continues to grow, and managers must thoughtfully engage in the growth process to plan for change and to evolve the department and mission.

Things to Know Before Attending Class

Directions and Hotel Information

The hotel address, phone number, URL, room rate, and room rate cut-off date are posted on the Locations/Dates tab. The hotel websites give detailed directions to the hotel as well as information about the location. Please call the hotel directly to make a room reservation. Be sure to identify yourself as an HCPro Boot Camp participant. Please be sure to make your reservation before the cut-off date. If you reserve after the cut-off date, you’ll need to contact the hotel to determine room availability and rates.

Course Materials 

When you arrive at class, you will receive two books containing the class materials utilized throughout the Boot Camp. These books will be yours to keep, so plan accordingly in allowing enough room in your luggage on the return trip home. The books weigh approximately 8–10 pounds. Books may also be shipped from the hotel at your own expense.

Manuals Needed For Class 

There are no manuals required for participation in this class.

Classroom Time 

Other than short breaks and lunch, we will be in class from 8:00 a.m. to at least 5:00 p.m. each day, with the exception of the final day. In order to focus all attention on the course and to not distract other participants or the instructor, cell phone use during class is strictly prohibited. We will take short breaks (up to 15 minutes each) throughout the day that will give participants an opportunity to make calls, use the restroom, etc., in addition to a lunch break.

Lunch 

We will take about a 30-minute break for lunch each day. We typically provide coffee in the morning and drinks and a light snack in the afternoon; everyone is on their own for lunch. Note that many hotels do not have restaurants on-site. If you are flying to the course, we generally recommend renting a car, or investigating the availability of hotel shuttle or ride share.

Please bring the following to all classes:

  • Sticky notes/flags
  • Pen/Pencil
  • Layered clothing (e.g., light sweater, light jacket, etc.)

Dress 

Business attire is not necessary. Please dress comfortably. Sometimes classrooms are on the cool side, even during the warmer months. You may be more comfortable if you bring a sweater or sweatshirt in case you get cold.

What is the focus of the Leadership in CDI Boot Camp?
Many are asked to take on the CDI manager role with little preparation or understanding of CDI functions or the process of managing those functions. This course is designed to encourage discussion and exploration of the responsibilities, challenges, and best practices related to management and direction of a CDI department. 

Are there any prerequisites?
No. However, because of the course's fast-paced nature, it is recommended (but not required) that participants have at least one year of experience working in a hospital. This course is taught on a basic to intermediate level.

Where is the course offered?
Open registration courses are offered at various locations around the country, typically at mid-priced business hotels such as Hyatt Place or Hilton Garden Inn. For a current schedule of upcoming open registration courses, click on "Course Locations/Dates."
