Agenda

1 hour
Perfect Reporting by Identifying Surgical Complications
Adriane Martin, DO, FACOS, CCDS
This session will help coders identify what is considered a surgical complication within the medical record and review general considerations for intraoperative and postoperative complications. Inpatient coders will learn to define a cause-and-effect relationship, identify situations in which diagnoses/conditions are potentially inherent and/or unavoidable, and describe common diagnoses that are potentially surgical complications.

50 minutes
Properly Report ICD-10-PCS Spinal Fusion Procedures
Jillian Harrington, MHA, CPC, CPC-I, CPC-P, CCS, CCS-P, CEMC, MHP
Inpatient coders are frequently challenged by reporting spinal procedures accurately in ICD-10-PCS. The complexity of the procedures, frequent gaps in provider documentation, and required anatomical knowledge and terminology can make reporting the most specific procedures very difficult. This session will review spinal anatomy as well as spinal fusions. Pertinent coding background and documentation guidelines for ICD-10-PCS will also be covered, as well as best practices for reporting these procedures.

45 minutes
Understand and Leverage ICD-10-CM/PCS Inpatient Coding Denials for Future Prevention
Malissa Powers, BS, RHIT, CCS, CDIP, CICA
Government and private payers frequently update guidance and regulations seemingly to come up with new reasons to deny ICD-10-CM/PCS claims, which in turn affects MS-DRG assignment. This session will cover these coding denials while shining a light on their clinical validation components. Through coding practice examples, the session will heighten inpatient coders’ awareness of these denials and help facilities develop a comprehensive appeal strategy.

50 minutes
Break Down the ICD-10-CM Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting for the Inpatient Setting

Jillian Harrington, MHA, CPC, CPC-I, CPC-P, CCS, CCS-P, CEMC, MHP
Each year the ICD-10-CM Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting are updated with pertinent information for inpatient coders. This session will give attendees a solid understanding of the guidelines, which is imperative for accurate code assignment and reimbursement.

30 minutes
Q&A (Day 1)
Join Adriane Martin, Jillian Harrington, and Malissa Powers for a live Q&A and submit all your questions from the day’s sessions.

45 minutes
CDI/Coding Collaboration: Improving Communication
Shannon E. McCall, RHIA, CCS, CCS-P, CPC, CPC-I, CEMC, CRC, CCDS, CCDS-O

CDI and coder collaboration is essential for medical practices and hospitals alike. This keynote, presented by expert Shannon McCall, will cover common pitfalls in CDI and coder communication as well as ways to help bridge any gaps.

55 minutes
Shore Up Reporting for Common, Complex Inpatient Diagnoses

Shannon E. McCall, RHIA, CCS, CCS-P, CPC, CPC-I, CEMC, CRC, CCDS, CCDS-O
Coders must possess detailed knowledge of coding guidance and documentation needs to properly report complex but commonplace inpatient diagnoses. However, their job is made more difficult by documentation challenges and differences in reimbursement methodologies. This session will review common and tricky inpatient diagnoses, including heart failure, myocardial infarction, and diabetes.

50 minutes
Attack Cardiac Reporting, Part One: ICD-10-CM
Ed O’Beirne, CCS, PA, CDIP
When reporting cardiac conditions in ICD-10-CM, coders must be aware of reporting requirements, as well as the anatomical and clinical details of these conditions, to report the most appropriate codes. During part one of this two-part session, Ed O’Beirne will explain cardiac anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology, and review ICD-10-CM coding challenges and requirements associated with the cardiac system.

55 minutes
Attack Cardiac Reporting, Part Two: ICD-10-PCS
Ed O’Beirne, CCS, PA, CDIP
In ICD-10-PCS, coders must be acutely aware of reporting requirements for procedures such as a coronary artery bypass graft or valve replacement in order to report the most appropriate codes. During part two of this two-part session, through case studies and coding examples, Ed O’Beirne will provide coders with the details to decipher provider documentation and code in ICD-10-PCS compliantly with Medicare rules and regulations.

30 minutes
Q&A (Day 2)
Join Shannon E. McCall and Ed O’Beirne for a live Q&A and submit all your questions from the day’s sessions.
