ICD-10-CM introduces significant changes for diabetes coding. Coders will see more combination codes that include manifestations and associated conditions. In some cases, the diabetes code will act as its own CC or MCC. Without complete, accurate documentation, coders will be forced to use an unspecified default code.

During this program, our expert speaker Jillian Harrington, MHA, CPC, CPC-I, CPC-P, CCS, CCS-P, MHP, will explain how ICD-10-CM combination codes for diabetes better represent the patient's disease process and all associated conditions. In addition, ICD-10-CM divides diabetes into five categories instead of the two provided by ICD-9-CM. Coders need to become familiar with the additional specificity in the new codes as well as the increased documentation required to accurately code diabetes in ICD-10-CM.

At the end of the program, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the differences between ICD-9-CM and ICD-10-CM coding for diabetes
  • Apply guidelines for diabetes coding in ICD-10-CM
  • Assess physician documentation for diabetes and related conditions
  • Suggest ways to improve documentation for diabetes to physicians
