Presented by: Laurie Prescott, MSN, RN, CCDS, CCDS-O, CDIP, CRC

Encephalopathy. It’s a broad term for any brain disease that alters brain function or structure. Yet physicians often document it as the diagnosis requiring admission, neglecting to capture the underlying etiology or further specify related conditions contributing to the patient’s condition. That’s why the term remains one of the top conditions ACDIS members seek help with.

In this 90-minute webinar, Laurie Prescott, MSN, RN, CCDS, CCDS-O, CDIP, CRC, CDI education director for HCPro, will explain how to differentiate between four common types of encephalopathy—toxic, metabolic, hepatic, and septic—along with each type’s pathophysiology.  Prescott will provide CDI specialists and coders with the details they need to delve into provider documentation and code compliantly.

The presentation will conclude with a live Q&A during which attendees can submit questions. **

At the conclusion of this program, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the various types of encephalopathy
  • Incorporate critical clinical elements such as lab findings and history & physical elements into queries
  • Define the difference between altered mental status and more specific diagnoses such as encephalitis or meningitis

  • Review of current clinical literature
  • Analysis of encephalopathy patient outcome implications
  • Overview of etiologies
    • Toxic
    • Metabolic
    • Hepatic
    • Septic
  • Documentation and educational opportunities
    • Data mining for physician engagement
  • Compliant query generation and case study review
  • Q&A
