Presented on: Wednesday, January 26, 2022
Presented by: Christopher Acevedo, Chief Operations Officer, Acevedo Consulting Inc.
Ensure you’re ready to document, code, and bill using Medicare’s new rules for “split (or shared)” facility visits when a physician and a qualified healthcare professional are both involved in the encounter. A spate of updated billing rules, including new time-based requirements, take effect January 1, 2022.
Physicians and nonphysician practitioners who have been accustomed to reporting shared facility visits to the same patient on the same day must adjust to major changes in how these services are now documented and billed to Medicare. They’ve been given very little lead time, as CMS finalized the policies in the final 2022 Medicare physician fee schedule, released November 2. In this session, you’ll gain the information you need to report split (or shared) visits accurately and compliantly.
At the conclusion of this program, participants will be able to:
- Understand the two methods for determining the “substantive portion” of a split/shared service in 2022 and identify which one works best for their clinicians
- Properly apply the new modifier -FS for split/shared services and understand how it interacts with other modifiers
- Understand when it does and does not make sense to use split/shared billing
- Grasp when it’s appropriate to report prolonged split/shared services
Agenda
- The definition of “substantive portion” and how to determine which clinician provided it (Hint: You have options for determining the substantive portion, but only in 2022)
- The scope of the new split (or shared) policy, specifically the codes and settings to which it applies
- When and how to report prolonged services with the new rules
- Compliance risk areas to guard against when ensuring accurate claims reporting
- Q&A
Who Should Listen?
