Outpatient CDI Expansion: Getting Started

Sunday, May 1, 2022 — Monday, May 2, 2022 | Orlando, FL

Outpatient CDI is gathering rapid momentum. Approximately 25% of respondents to the 2021 ACDIS CDI Week Industry Survey review outpatient records in some capacity, with another 20% indicating their organization is looking to expand in that area in the near future. With this expansion comes challenges. Outpatient settings have unique clinical and coding focus areas, and the rules governing code assignment can differ. Those seeking to expand to these new setting types need to understand not only how these differences come into play but also how to establish new workflows and models.

During this two-day session, participants will learn about fundamental differences in coding systems, rules for applying different code sets, and documentation requirements affecting code assignment. On day 1 ACDIS’ own CDI Education Director Laurie L. Prescott, MSN, RN, CCDS, CCDS-O, CDIP, CRC, will help participants explore common documentation concerns seen in outpatient settings, assess necessary coding and clinical criteria, and address concerns related to compliant query practices.

On day 2 you’ll hear from two organizations that have implemented successful outpatient programs. Tracy Boldt, RN, BSN, CCDS, CDIP, CDI manager at Essentia Health in Duluth, Minnesota, and Dawn Diven, RN, CCDS, CDIP, CCDS-O, CDI system enterprise director, West Virginia University Medicine based in Morgantown, West Virginia, will share their experiences expanding into outpatient services including how to support administration, identifying metrics appropriate for outpatient endeavors, identifying and training effective outpatient CDI staff, developing physician query processes, supporting outpatient clinical teams, and so much more.
