This course identifies the types and general use of the coding systems used in the United States. It identifies the diagnosis coding classification and the two levels of the Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) used for reporting hospital outpatient and provider services.

At the completion of this module, the participant will be able to:

  • Describe code sets used for reporting for diagnosis and procedural services
  • Explain the difference between CPT and HCPCS codes
  • Determine which groups release each set of codes used by facilities
  • Understand the basics of documentation and reporting for outpatient facility E/M services
  • Understand the components of the CPT surgical package
  • Identify a “separate procedure” and when it is reported
  • Assign hospital outpatient facility modifiers correctly
