Regardless the field, it takes specific skills to be an effective manager. Competently navigating the staff and outcomes of a clinical documentation integrity (CDI) department comes with its own set of challenges, and rewards.

CDI managers and directors need to set the mission and values for the CDI team, to establish the ethics, ethos, and even enthusiasm for the program. In steering the CDI ship, directors and managers need to determine which of the fine details of data might be necessary to win administrative support, and which can help you woo physicians to your CDI program’s worth. 

To take the helm and steer the ship effectively, there’s a lot you need to know.

The CDI Management Essentials, ACDIS’ pre-conference event, gathers CDI experts and peers in leadership to aid in plotting the most successful course for your organization.

On Day 1, ACDIS’ CDI Education Director Laurie Prescott, RN, MSN, CCDS, CCDS-O, CDIP, CRC, takes the lead to provide participants with tools to develop CDI roles and responsibilities, interview potential candidates, and hire the right crew for your CDI program. She’ll also provide tips for ongoing staff assessment, structuring or restructuring the program, and managing staff across facilities. Attendees will learn how to delve into data elements and understand how changing priorities with quality-of-care initiatives can lead to new opportunities for CDI efforts. 

On Day 2, join Tonya Motsinger, MBA, BSN, RN, CDI system director at OhioHealth with 60 CDI team members as she discusses the challenges of moving from a facility-based CDI program to a system-wide perspective. Motsinger will discuss how roles and responsibilities of CDI staff may change and grow as organizations expand. She’ll also offer insight into how a data informaticist can illuminate successes and opportunities within an organization.

During the second part of Day 2, ACDIS Advisory Board member Chinedum Mogbo, MBBS, MsHIM, RHIA, CDIP, CCDS, CCS, CDI manager at Tenet Healthcare in Dallas, Texas, offers insight into how managers might rise to meet the needs of CDI programs in a post-pandemic world. She’ll talk about challenges of remote staffing verses onsite versus hybrid models. Mogbo also delves into concerns related to diversity, collaboration, and staff support.

CDI Management Essentials

Speakers

Chinedum Mogbo, MBBS, MsHIM, RHIA, CDIP, CCDS, CCS, is the CDI manager at Tenet Healthcare in Dallas, Texas, where she has successfully managed various teams, and has been involved in the deployment of in-house curriculum for training CDI specialists. An active member of the ACDIS Advisory Board, she has experience as a CDI training director for a California-based health system and actively participates in the CDIP and RHIA exam-item writing with AHIMA. Mogbo serves as co-chair of the AHIMA CDI practice council—most recently working on the 2019 Guidelines for Achieving a Compliant Query Practice, a joint publication between ACDIS and AHIMA.

Tonya Motsinger, BSN, MBA, CDI system director at OhioHealth, moved to CDI in 2011 and has grown OhioHealth’s program from 12 to 60 CDI team members across 10 facilities and multiple outpatient ambulatory sites. The program has expanded to include daily reviews of all inpatient payers, HCC ambulatory, and behavioral health areas. Motsinger has more than 20 years’ experience in medical surgical, critical care, and the ED, serving in various administrative roles and multi-system initiatives. She graduated from Bowling Green State University in Toledo in 1985 and earned an MBA from Capital University in 1994.

Laurie L. Prescott, MSN, RN, CCDS, CDIP, CRC, CCDS-O, Prescott’s trademark warmth and wit are coupled with unparalleled understanding of CDI and a passion for education. CDI professionals across the country recognize her as the voice of authority and credit their professional development to her boot camps, books, and memorable appearances at Association of Clinical Documentation Integrity (ACDIS) events. 

Prescott has worked in CDI for more than 13 years and has served as the CDI education director at ACDIS for more than seven years. She is an instructor for the CDI Boot Camps, a subject matter expert for ACDIS, a member of the CCDS-O exam board, a member of the ACDIS Advisory Board, and the author of the much loved ACDIS Pocket Guide series.
