Annual wellness visits (AWV) and initial preventive physical examinations (IPPE or “Welcome to Medicare” visits) are high-paying services available to every Medicare beneficiary, yet most don’t elect to take advantage of them. In 2019, for instance, only 11 million out of 62 million beneficiaries did. That’s money left on the table for practices, with the codes paying between $134 and $170 nationally.

Explaining the benefits to patients helps, but practices should also make sure that providers, coders, and billers understand these visits to bill them without any problems that cut into payments. Learn what the visits do and do not include, how they must be documented and noted, and what pitfalls to avoid in completing the services and submitting the bills.

At the conclusion of this program, participants will be able to:

  • Identify when initial and subsequent AWVs and IPPEs are appropriate
  • Compliantly and effectively encourage patients to use their AWV/IPPE benefits
  • Identify the necessary elements of each service and properly document them
  • Identify issues that can impede performance or billing of these services
  • Handle common AWV/IPPE denial causes

  • AWV and IPPE: How they differ
  • Common timing and purpose issues (NOT a "physical")
  • AWVs and the bottom line: Why there’s money on the table
  • Soliciting: How much can you advertise these visits to beneficiaries without "inducing"?
  • A complete run-through of the necessary elements
  • Tests and instruments you can use
  • When the AWV/IPPE becomes a sick visit (Should you turn to modifiers -25 or -59? Different encounter?)
  • New COVID-era telehealth issues: How much examining can you really do? When should you abandon the visit?
  • Billing issues (e.g., what if you find out afterwards the patient had another AWV last month?)
  • Does the IPPE make the patient "established" next time?
  • Q&A

Who Should Listen?

  • Coders and billers
  • Coding and billing managers
  • Providers and clinical staff
  • Documentation specialists
