Sepsis and its various disease progressions and complications result in nearly 270,000 deaths annually, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Furthermore, a number of patients sick with COVID-19 have experienced an immune response called a cytokine storm, which in turn may lead to sepsis. Challenging clinical definitions make it difficult to capture the most accurate documentation for code assignment—and this affects quality assessments, data analysis, and population health research. During this program, renowned speaker Cesar Limjoco, MD, will walk participants through the various definitions of sepsis and help them create a plan for effective and compliant query practices.

At the conclusion of this program, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the third universal definition of sepsis
  • Differentiate between the various sepsis definitions and their uses
  • Identify relevant ICD-10-CM Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting and AHA Coding Clinic recommendations for correct code assignment
  • Analyze clinical indicators of selected diagnoses to identify query opportunities
  • Incorporate insight from medical staff, quality, coding, and CDI to develop compliant query and denials management strategies

  • Clinical conditions and sepsis-related disease definitions

    • Septic shock
