The past year has seen the release of two sets of highly anticipated—and extremely challenging—Interpretive Guidelines from CMS: restraints and infection control.
The subject of restraints is a complicated and controversial one, and the new Interpretive Guidelines are an attempt to clarify CMS' expectations. Major differences exist in standards for restraints with patients exhibiting aggressive/violent behavior and those who are restrained for medical or surgical reasons, It is imperative that you demonstrate to CMS that you are using each one appropriately for the right patient population.
Similarly, CMS has seen additions and changes to Interpretive Guidelines for infection control. Changes this year focus on three areas: inclusion of ambulatory care, use of bundles, and log requirement clarification. Specific guidelines have also been issued for hospital leadership to follow.

MEET THE SPEAKERS
Susan W. Hendrickson, MHRD/OD, RN, CPHQ, FACHE is director of clinical quality and patient safety for the Via Christi Wichita Health Network in Wichita, Kansas. In her role she oversees patient safety, core measures, quality management/process improvement, clinical risk management, infection control, patient grievance resolution, regulatory compliance and survey readiness activities for two acute care campuses, a free-standing physical rehabilitation hospital and a behavioral health facility.
Candace Friedman is Director of Infection Control and Epidemiology at the University of Michigan Health System. She has broad experience practicing infection prevention and control during her 30-year healthcare career. Prior to her current position, Ms. Friedman served as an Infection Control Coordinator at Hutzel Hospital in Detroit. She is a past president of the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology.
