Orthopedic coding, for both procedure and diagnosis codes, remains challenging due to the complex nature of bones and joints and the specificity of the codes. Current problems with physician documentation will only be magnified with the greatly expanded code set for reporting orthopedic diagnoses in ICD-10-CM.

During this 90 minute on-demand webcast, our expert speaker will review the anatomy of major joints, such as the knees, shoulders, hips, and ankles, and note the important terms coders need to know to report the proper procedures. She will also review common documentation problem areas and potential concerns with the expanded orthopedic codes in ICD-10-CM.


  1. Orthopedic CPT code challenges and problem areas for the major joints:

  2. Review of key anatomy
  3. Discussion of accurate modifier use for orthopedic procedures

Meet the Speaker

Nena Scott, MSEd, RHIA, CCS, CCS-P, CCDS, AHIMA-Approved ICD-10-CM/PCS Trainer, is the director of education at TrustHCS. She is an accomplished trainer with over 24 years of experience in education. Scott has vast management, education, coding, and auditing expertise. She has over 10 years of management experience, a combined 15 years educating, and 26 years of coding and auditing experience. Throughout the years educating, she kept a part-time job as an auditor and coder in order to stay abreast of coding and regulatory changes and updates. Throughout her management and coding experience, she has also performed coding compliance audits. As a member of the Mississippi Health Information Management Association, she was recognized with the champion award in 2010, educator award in 2009, and distinguished member award in 2007. She is currently pursuing a PhD in educational leadership.
