Coding Strategies: Invasive Cardiology Curriculum

Description

The Coding Strategies: Invasive Cardiology Curriculum is a collection of five online courses that cover all aspects of procedure coding for invasive cardiology services. The curriculum includes courses on diagnostic cardiac catheterization, coronary interventions, peripheral angiograms, peripheral interventions such as angioplasty and atherectomy, and peripheral angiograms and interventions performed in conjunction with cardiac catheterization.

Features

Each course explains procedure techniques, coding guidelines, modifier use, coverage issues, and reimbursement considerations. The courses contain color diagrams to enhance the participant’s understanding of the applicable anatomy and procedure techniques. The courses contain examples, case studies, and multiple-choice exercises to improve comprehension and retention. Each course ends with a multiple-choice assessment to test the learner’s knowledge of the material.

Users can access the Online Learning Center whenever and wherever they wish. At each login, users are returned to the last slide viewed during the previous session, allowing for convenient and flexible learning.

Audience

Coding and billing professionals working in the physician practice or hospital outpatient setting.

Diagnostic Cardiac Catheterization

Pub Code: XXICCCSIVC1

Audience

Coding and charge capture professionals working in the physician practice or hospital outpatient setting.

Description

This course covers coding guidelines for diagnostic cardiac catheterization, including procedures performed for congenital heart disease. Topics include but are not limited to:

  • Cardiac anatomy
  • Coronary artery catheterization
  • Right heart catheterization
  • Left heart catheterization
  • Septal puncture
  • Coronary angiography, ventriculography, aortography, and pulmonary angiography
  • Cardiac catheterization for congenital heart disease
  • Pharmacologic and exercise challenge tests

Features

The course discusses procedure techniques, coding guidelines, documentation requirements, modifier use, and bundling issues. It includes exercises and actual procedure notes for hands-on learning. At the completion of the course, a scored assessment tests the learner’s comprehension of the material. This course will take most users about four hours to complete.

Percutaneous Coronary Interventions

Pub Code: XXICCCSIVC2

Audience

Coding and charge capture professionals working in the physician practice or hospital outpatient setting.

Description

The course discusses procedure techniques, coding guidelines, documentation requirements, modifier use, and bundling issues. Topics include but are not limited to:

  • Coding diagnostic cardiac catheterization in conjunction with interventions
  • “Single vessel” and “each additional branch” codes
  • Coronary artery modifiers
  • Coronary artery angioplasty, atherectomy, and stent placement
  • Hospital HCPCS codes for drug-eluting stent placement
  • Bypass graft interventions
  • Interventions for acute MI and chronic total occlusion
  • Coronary thrombectomy and thrombolysis
  • Intra-aortic balloon pumps and ventricular assist devices
  • Closure of septal defects, closure of PDA, and transcatheter valve replacement

Features

This course includes anatomic diagrams, images of medical devices, and exercises and actual procedure notes for hands-on learning. At the completion of the course, a scored assessment tests the learner’s comprehension of the material. This course will take most users about four hours to complete.

Peripheral Angiography

Pub Code: XXICCCSIVC3

Audience

Coding and charge capture professionals working in the physician practice or hospital outpatient setting.

Description

This course discusses procedure techniques, coding guidelines, documentation requirements, modifier use, and bundling issues. Topics include but are not limited to:

  • Vessel order and vascular families
  • Selective and nonselective angiograms
  • Catheter placement coding guidelines
  • Head and neck angiograms
  • Angiograms of the thorax and arms
  • Renal and visceral angiograms
  • Aortograms and lower extremity angiograms

Features

This course includes exercises and actual procedure notes for hands-on learning, as well as a printable job aid with vascular diagrams. At the completion of the course, a scored assessment tests the learner’s comprehension of the material. This course will take most users about six hours to complete.

Peripheral Interventions

Pub Code: XXICCCSIVC4

Audience

Coding and charge capture professionals working in the physician practice or hospital outpatient setting.

Description

This course builds on the material covered in course IVC3 (Peripheral Angiography) by preparing participants to assign procedure codes for percutaneous peripheral vascular interventions. Procedures covered in this course include but are not limited to:

  • Lower extremity revascularization
  • Other stent placement, angioplasty, and atherectomy procedures
  • Arterial mechanical thrombectomy
  • Transcatheter embolization
  • Transcatheter infusion
  • Diagnostic angiograms performed in conjunction with interventions

Features

The course discusses procedure techniques, coding guidelines, documentation requirements, modifier use, and bundling issues. It includes exercises and actual procedure notes for hands-on learning. At the completion of the course, a scored assessment tests the learner’s comprehension of the material. This course will take most users about five hours to complete.

Peripheral Procedures With Heart Catheterization

Pub Code: XXICCCSIVC5

Audience

Coding and charge capture professionals working in the physician practice or hospital outpatient setting.

Description

This course covers the special coding rules that apply when a cardiologist performs a peripheral angiogram or intervention during the same session as a cardiac catheterization. Topics include but are not limited to:

  • Indications for performing peripheral procedures with heart cath
  • Arch aortograms and thoracic aortograms
  • Abdominal aortograms and nonselective renal angiograms
  • Nonselective lower extremity arteriograms
  • Selective renal arteriograms
  • Selective lower extremity arteriograms
  • Selective head and neck arteriograms
  • Peripheral angioplasty and stent placement together with heart cath

Features
