Medicare and commercial payers continue to aggressively audit and deny claims using data analysis, but few provider organizations proactively utilize data analysis to prevent and address those very same denials. Data analysis helps identify the root causes of denials at the facility level, which is critical in improving processes to mitigate them. However, understanding which data elements to analyze and how to trace denial reasons back to root causes can be complex, and success requires a multidisciplinary, team-based approach.

Join Tracey A. Tomak, RHIA, PMP, for this 90-minute webinar and interactive Q&A to learn how to apply a data- and team-based denials prevention program at your facility. Tomak will take you through the process of identifying the key players who must be involved to facilitate a team-based approach to denials prevention. She will demonstrate how to develop a proactive denials management action plan using data analytics. Sample denial and audit reports will show you how to create data-based root cause trending and detail reports for your facility.

At the conclusion of this program, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the difference between the issue or reason code (RARCs and CARCs) and the root cause of the denial
  • Determine which data elements are already available for a facility’s use in denials management data analysis
  • Develop a denials management/prevention program with a better understanding of key data elements to create or use for improved data analysis

  • Define the differences between payer issue and reason codes and the root cause of the denial at the facility level
    • Compare denial codes with payers’ denial issues
    • Discuss common root causes facilities should begin to report and analyze
    • Evaluate denial issues in terms of root causes
  • Identify the key players who should be involved in reviewing denial and audit data
    • Determine what is at stake for each team member's department
    • Gather the relevant data to use for your analysis
    • Sample trending reports
  • Create a denials action plan based on data analysis findings
    • Establish ways to prioritize multiple root causes
    • Develop an action plan from a root cause
    • Case study
