Presented on: Tuesday, May 19, 2020 1:00-2:30 p.m. Eastern

Presented by: Temeka Davis, RHIT

Staying abreast of the ever-changing clinical definitions and guidelines for infectious diseases such as novel coronavirus (COVID-19) is complicated for inpatient coders, which in turn makes reporting these diagnoses and procedures even more complex. Inpatient coders need a solid understanding of complex anatomical terminology and ICD-10-CM/PCS coding guidelines in order to select the most specific codes for these diagnoses and their related procedures.

Provider documentation should include a specific diagnosis, if known, of the type of infection being treated after the work-up, as well as the organism that caused the infectious condition/disease. During this webinar, coders will become familiar with new ICD-10-CM codes and instructions provided to address new viral illnesses as they develop such as COVID-19 and Zika virus. Common treatment and prevention methods used to treat infectious conditions will be discussed, as well as certain complications that can occur.

During this 90-minute webinar, Temeka Davis, RHIT, will review ICD-10-CM/PCS documentation and coding for infectious diseases including sepsis, HIV, and COVID-19, as well as related procedures for these conditions such as central venous line Insertions. Through case studies and coding examples, the speaker will review how to query for clarification, link codes to the documentation, and provide ICD-10-CM/PCS documentation tips. The presentation will conclude with a live Q&A during which attendees can submit questions.

At the conclusion of this program, participants will be able to:

  • Demonstrate accurate and precise ICD-10-CM/PCS reporting for infectious diseases
  • Utilize information for queries to clarify procedure documentation
  • Explain common ICD-10-CM diagnoses for infectious diseases including novel coronavirus and sepsis
  • Perfect querying for clarification of specific conditions being treated
