Getting a Handle on Condition Code 44 and How It Impacts Providers

Loyal Listener Library

Presented on: Wednesday, June 12, 2019 | 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. Eastern

Presented by: Dawn Crump, CHC, SSBB, MA; and Tracey Tomak, RHIA, PMP

Provider confusion about when to use condition code 44 hasn’t gone away, and not using it correctly still causes problems in health systems that affect billing, compliance, and patients. Because condition code 44 requires short turnarounds before patient discharge, processes and policies need to be in place for capturing necessary documentation for accurate billing.

In this 90-minute webinar, Dawn Crump, CHC, SSBB, MA, and Tracey Tomak, RHIA, PMP, will walk listeners through condition code 44, providing an overview of the rules and regulations, and explain who is impacted on the administrative side as soon as the patient comes in. They will go through the process of using condition code 44 so providers know which departments—from billing to compliance and documentation—should be involved and when. They will help listeners get a handle on the tight time frame required to use condition code 44 and to ensure accurate and timely documentation and proper billing. Using case studies, they will provide lessons learned in order to improve condition code 44 processes.

At the conclusion of this program, participants will be able to:

  • Describe how condition code 44 affects both patients and multiple departments within the health system.
