Level of Program:

The role of case management is evolving beyond checking up on patient status as case managers become increasingly involved in analyzing Medicare regulations, tracking insurance authorizations, and studying healthcare reform. Case management’s part in utilization management (UM) is expanding, and case managers need more skills than ever to ensure correct patient status assignment and defend patient charts against audits.

During the first part of this three-hour virtual workshop, expert speaker June Stark, RN, BSN, MEd, will help participants understand the critical role of case managers in today’s UM committees and complex healthcare landscape.

The second part of the workshop will offer strategies for ensuring compliance with patient status requirements, including the 2-midnight rule. An update on BFCC-QIO audits will be provided along with tips for defending chart audits and understanding the audit process.

The final part of the workshop will provide guidance on total hip (THA) and total knee arthroplasty (TKA) patient status assignment, including proactive approaches to ensure your charts can withstand the THA and TKA audits planned for 2020.

Each part of the workshop will be complemented by case studies and Q&A to reinforce learning and ensure your facility is knowledgeable about placing case managers in UM roles.

At the conclusion of this program, participants will be able to:

  • Examine their current practice of applying the 2-midnight rule and identify new strategies for improving compliance
  • Assess their compliance with joint replacement patient status requirements
  • Review best practices for expanding case managers’ involvement in utilization management
