Drastic changes to E/M reporting are a real option as soon as January 1, as CMS weighs how quickly to move forward with significant payment and documentation revisions. Because E/M services are at the heart of many practices’ revenue, the impact could be huge. The proposed 2019 Medicare physician fee schedule, released July 12, signals that CMS is serious about overhauling its E/M reimbursement structure and revising its documentation guidelines completely and as soon as January 1. The 2019 final rule, expected out in early November, will formalize E/M-related changes for 2019. Practices need to understand the changes in order to chart a clear path for the new year and beyond.

At the conclusion of this program, participants will be able to:

  • Discover how CMS’ plan for 2019 may dramatically shift a major source of revenue — E/M encounters
  • Find out the direct impact on revenue cycle and billing operations
  • Discern the E/M documentation changes everyone should be preparing for
  • Take steps to get ahead of CMS’ E/M changes and prepare for success

  • See what changes to E/M services CMS has in store in 2019
  • See how CMS envisions a new dawn on E/M payments, starting with a single payment rate for levels 2 through 5 codes
  • Find out what documentation standards CMS favors (hint: medical decision-making and time) and how you may choose your own course next year
  • Discover which specialties stand to gain or lose money under the proposed payment changes
  • Do what you can to prepare: With changes coming fast, be proactive to get your practice ready to continue operations without missing a beat
