Presented on: Tuesday, February 26, 2019

Presented by: Margie Scalley Vaught, CPC, COC, CPC-I, CCS-P, MCS-P, ACS-EM, ACS-OR

In the 2019 update to its National Correct Coding Initiative(CCI)policy manual, Medicare unveiled a new policy for when it would be appropriate to report multiple primary fusion codes in the same encounter. The new policy presents both opportunities and possible pitfalls; clinicians and coders must be aware of the new documentation requirements for correct coding. In the same update, Medicare addressed coding of lumbar decompression and when it would be appropriate to report at the same anatomic site as a fusion.

This webinar will present a detailed discussion and examples of when it would be appropriate to report multiple primary spinal fusion codes, based on CCI policy manual guidance, as well as a discussion of the impact of the new Medicare policy on provider documentation. In addition, expert speaker Margie Scalley Vaught, CPC, COC, CPC-I, CCS-P, MCS-P, ACS-EM, ACS-OR, will review the new CCI manual policy for reporting lumbar decompression at the vertebral level as a decompression; she will also address other spine coding problem areas, including bone marrow autografts, corpectomy coding, and biomechanical instrumentation. Join Vaught at the end of the webinar for a live Q&A session.

At the conclusion of this program, participants will be able to:

  • The new CCI coding policy for spinal fusion coding at multiple levels, and when it is appropriate to report more than one fusion code
  • The updated Medicare policy for lumbar decompression performed at the same encounter as fusion
  • When it is acceptable to separately report exploration of fusion with an arthrodesis
  • Appropriate documentation and coding for spinal cages inserted with other types of instrumentation
  • The most recent changes to documentation and coding guidelines for bone marrow aspiration
